The Mission of Saint John’s School is to educate our students so that wherever they go in life they will take with them a solid, early education and they will carry within themselves a childhood experience of people who loved and cared for them in a way that reflects the values of the Orthodox Christian Faith.

School Programs

Preschool 1 & 2

Saint John’s Preschool curriculum provides both group and individual activities to promote creativity and exploration. Teachers work to cultivate a love of learning while introducing early math, literacy, and other age-appropriate subjects.

Preschool 1, ages 3
Preschool 2, ages 4 & 5

A group of children and a woman outdoors near a grassy area, with some children looking and pointing at something, possibly an animal or object, while the woman talks and points at something in the distance.

Elementary K-6

We use curriculum for core subjects that are nationally recognized. We use the Wonders program published by McGraw Hill for Language, and Saxon Math published by Houghton Mifflin.

Orthodox Christian faith and values are woven into the daily routine. For example we begin each day with prayers in our Cathedral where the children enjoy singing.

We generally follow the Anchorage School District calendar with a few exceptions.

We focus on:

  • Well-managed classes to ensure a successful atmosphere for learning

  • Ample outside time for experiential learning

Kindergarten, age 5 & 6

Children playing with a colorful parachute indoors. Some kids are sitting or lying on the floor, holding the edge of the parachute, while a woman is assisting on the left side.

Junior High

Our Junior High holds high academic standards while also focusing on strong character building to prepare our students to excel in high school and beyond. We achieve these goals through direct teaching, hands-on projects, and our “Intensives” program. Our “Intensives” allow us to set aside a block of days, twice a year, to explore locations in Alaska through outdoor experiences and activities with experts in their fields to learn about the environment and history.

Orthodox Christian faith and values are woven into the daily routine. We begin each day with prayers in our Cathedral where the children enjoy singing. Junior High students are responsible to read aloud a short reading each day.

Summer Program

Our summer program is a favorite of students and incorporates fun activities outdoors with lessons.

We provide students with 6 weeks of themed activities where they can experience summer “Alaska style”.
