You play a very important role in your child’s education. We are glad to be working with you and your children this year! Below you will find information about the classroom policies.
Mrs. Dougherty – 8:15-10:30: Reading, Spelling, Writing, Grammar
Mrs. Humphries – 10:30 – 3:00: Math, Social Studies, Science, Handwriting
Students need to be at school by 8:15 because we start instruction immediately.
At this grade level, your support and active engagement are very important. Please write a note on the homework log if there were circumstances that prevented your child from completing their homework. Please let us know if the homework seems too difficult for your child.
The expectation in 2nd grade is that students will spend no more than 20 minutes a night on homework, not including their nightly reading.
Reading Aloud to You – The single most important thing that you can do to help your child be a better reader is to listen to them read to you! Please follow along so you can help them with any unknown words, and ask them questions about what they read.
Your child should read out loud to you for at least 10 minutes per night from a book on his/her reading level. You will know the book is about right if they can read 19 out of 20 words accurately and smoothly. Please let us know if you need to borrow some books on your child’s reading level. Typically, we will send home a book to cover part of the 10 minute reading time. Please return the class books by Friday. After your child reads, he/she needs to write the titles on the back of the homework log. Please initial and write the number of minutes read on the front of the homework log.
Spelling – Typically, there will be a worksheet or spelling activity Monday – Wednesday. On Thursday, please give your child a 10-word spelling practice test. Please correct the test and have your child write any misspelled words 3 times.
Math – Students will have fact practice and homework worksheets every night. It is important that you check your student’s work. If they get an incorrect answer – please mark it in another color before you correct it. That helps us know what we need to work on in class.
Science/Social Studies/Handwriting – Your child may have the occasional piece of homework for these subjects, but it is not likely to be on a daily basis.
If you want your child’s work prepared for you to pick up, please request schoolwork in the morning when you call him/her in absent. We can usually have it ready by the end of the school day. Please send all work and materials back with your child the next day, even if it is not done. For prearranged absences, please let the office know the dates your child will be gone. We will send some, but not all of the work your child will miss.
Pass backs will typically be sent home on Friday. The majority of work that isn’t in a workbook will come home. Please sign the “Pass Back Parent Signature” form and return it with your child the following Monday.
We have two snacks a day in the classroom. Please bring a large box or bag of snacks for the class when it is requested on the homework log.
If you need to contact us about how your child is doing at school, please call the school or email us at email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org. If you need to pick up your child early, please send a note or call the office. A short communication can be done via your child’s Homework Log.
Thank you for your support!
