September's Almost Over...

Dear St. John's Families,

It's hard to imagine that we are halfway through the first quarter of the school year! We have gotten off to a good start and students are now well established in their daily routinues in the classroom. Take a moment to read the remaining portion of this note to get the latest on what is happening at St. John's School.

Thank you,

Mrs. Streff

St. Sergius Chapel:  Students will walk to the St. Sergius Chapel located on the 50 acres adjacent to the Cathedral and School property on Wed., Sept. 26th at 12:15 in lieu of Hours. We do this each year to commemorate the life of St. Sergius a much revered Russian monk who built a chapel in the woods. Parents and siblings are invited to join us for this event. We will meet on the church steps at 12:15. Walkers should be prepared for wet and muddy conditions...the wearing of boots is recom-mended.

Divine Liturgy: This week, older students (4th-8th) will begin attending Liturgy on Thursday mornings. Liturgy will begin at 8:15 with the ringing of the church bells. Mrs. Ray and Miss Ray will meet their students in the Narthex and then go into the Nave as a group. Family members are invited to attend Liturgy with their students if they would like.

Weather Preparedness: September was certainly an eventful month from the standpoint of weather. And as we transition into the long season of the Alaskan winter, I would like to remind you to send your child to school with appropriate clothing for going outside. Unless the weather conditions are HORRIBLE all students are outside for recess or PE every day. It is our philosophy that students benefit greatly from the fresh air and exercise that they get during PE and recess and that these activities enhance their learning potential.

Lunch: October's lunch menu is now available for you on this website. There will not be a Family Lunch Day in October because of our Fall Dinner event.

Fall Dinner: On Thurs., Oct. 11th St. John's School will host it's 4th Annual Fall Dinner fundraiser. This year's theme will be Greek and our dinner menu looks fantastic! You won't want to miss this event...in addition to dinner there will be a Silent Auction, a Dessert Auction, entertainment provided by Michael Smith and his band Nickels and Dimes and dancing!! And don't worry about it being a school night...school will start at 9:30 on Fri., Oct. 12th. Opa!!

Our Fall Dinner is the first of our two main fundrasiers during the school year. Tickets are being sent home for your convenience. Please return them with your payment.

If you are unable to attend this event please consider making a donation. Like all private schools, we rely on the generous financial support of people like you.

Northern Lights Entertainment Books:  Beginning in the third week of October, students will be selling the Northern Lights Entertainment Books. Look for more information to come home in the next few weeks about this fundraiser.
